This exhibition began in 2024 at SLOTprojects, Sydney, where Nheu started working with found materials. They offer her something that is already present: histories of function, labour, consumption, and social exchange. Along with their physical attributes of weight, texture, and resistance they invite the possibility of their reorientation.
Cutting, shaping, joining and assembling dissociate the materials from their original intent. New relationships are generated through displacement and reattachment. Decisions are guided by their inherent qualities: weight negotiates with balance; resistance is worked into adaptation; fragments find provisional association. Each element carries a trace of its former state into something unfamiliar.
Assemblage invites unexpected and clumsy encounters of disparate elements rudimentarily bound into new relationships. Here, on the spectrum of intention and response the process is neither predetermined nor resolved.
This work is a record of transformation: accumulated decisions, material tensions, and moments of resolution held in time. The work remains open to change, occupying a space between construction and deconstruction, stability and flux, where transformation is not an end point but an ongoing condition.
