PATTERNS IN THE LANDSCAPE
LIZ McNIVEN
6pm FRIDAY 19th OCTOBER 2012 - SATURDAY 24th NOVEMBER 2012
CCAS Gorman
This collection of abstract geometric paintings by Liz McNiven, entitled Patterns in the Landscape, explore the shapes, designs and colours of the natural world. Like a mirage on a hot day these paintings play with the mind’s perception, presenting a myriad of visual illusions. The work seeks to trick the mind into seeing a two-dimensional image as three-dimensional. Liz began working in this style twenty years ago, first on t-shirts, then hand painting lino prints and finally working on to canvas and producing sculptures from neon lights. She draws her inspiration from the traditions of her people the Budjitiand from her homelands within the Paroo River watershed country of southwest Queensland and northwest New South Wales. Artistic influences in these works include Bridget Riley’s use of optical illusion to create movement, vibrations and patterns and Victor Vasarely’s use of geometric patterns in his artwork and sculpture.
