DAY VISITOR

Gary Lee

9 April - 15 May 2010 | CCAS Gorman MAINSpace

"The nature of male beauty that appeals to me" says Lee, "lies with the ordinary kind of self-assurance that, in fact, the average guy may not even be remotely aware he has and which can also evolve in the course of a photo shoot. To me, this beauty is not at all about a particular body type."

As the title suggests Day Visitor is based on a series of visits to Lee's Canberra flat. All of the images are taken in a small area of garden and two rooms notable for their austerity: blank walls, beige furniture and only a hint of wall decoration, such as the corner of a picture frame. The images are uncensored in that there is no make-up and the models' bodies are unshaved and un-retouched. Props are also few consisting of a head or neck scarf, t-shirt, necklace or cushion. Importantly nothing seems to have been added and editing, like direction, is minimal if at all. (David Broker, 2010)
