All For You Page inspects how the solitary act of doom scrolling has flourished into a new mode of meaning-making, infiltrating private space and experience. Driven by Stuart Hall’s belief that our primary method of how we make sense of the world—having one-to-one conversations—has shifted from personal exchange to sponsored broadcasts, Johanna Ng looks for what messages are being distributed under the covers

For this body of work, Ng documented forty participants as they exposed their feeds, homes and habits for public viewing. In an attempt to meet her participants’ generosity, Ng performs an endurance piece: her own bedtime scrolling session that lasts the running time of her favourite movie The Truman Show (1998).

By resituating the private act of scrolling into a public one, Ng contemplates how culture and identity is formulated, reproduced, intersected or divided based on machine-learned assumptions of gender, race, politics and interests crafted by private companies. In the cacophony of assorted online buffoonery, will you experience moments of recognition or enter a new world of meaning sequestered in another person’s For You Page?

This exhibition is the product of collaborative exchange project – Three Days Walk. Co-developed by the teams at Canberra Contemporary and Firstdraft, this project presents Ng’s work at Canberra Contemporary’s project space, Platform, alongside a commissioned text by Kamberri/Canberra writer Chin-Jie Melodie Liu. Kamberri/Canberra-based artist Bridget Baskerville will simultaneously exhibit at Sydney’s Firstdraft gallery, accompanied by text from Gadigal/Sydney based writer Alanna O'Riley.
