LIGHT POSSESSES LIGHT

ARRYN SNOWBALL

6pm Thursday 6th December 2012 - Saturday 2nd February 2013

CCAS Gorman

For centuries the work of artists has been defined by their chosen media; from paint, bronze, print and photograph to the so-called new media of today. Although the idea of media as a construct has always been at the centre of Arryn Snowball’s practice he has never been limited by any one medium. While conventional definitions might be elusive, Snowball’s uncanny ability to present the mundane as awe-inspiring has remained a consistent theme in his practice. In Slow Dance and Light Sequence Snowball has added video and photography to his repertoire of banal transcendence. Simplicity is on the menu in the former where he held lamp to light black painted sticks on a slowly rotating Lazy Susan. The sharp edges of the sticks and blurred edges of their shadows flirt with the third dimension as they create the lyrical illusion of a choreographed routine.
